A five-step guide to gravity die Casting

Step 1: Prepare

  Before the gravity casting process begins, the first step is to prepare the mold itself. Essentially, this involves heating it to the right temperature, then spraying a refractory coating or lubricant on it. Not only does this lubricant maintain the temperature of the mold during fabrication, it also prevents premature solidification and facilitates removal of castings after they have solidified.

  High pressure can then be used to close and clamp the mold halves tightly together.

Step 2: Injection

  After this preparatory stage, the molten metal is removed from the furnace and poured directly into the mold through a downward sprue. This can be done manually, or in some cases with an automatic ladle; but either way, the process makes use of gravity. No extra force or pressure is applied. The molten liquid is simply inserted into the mold from an upright vertical position, where it works itself down into the casting due to the natural pull of gravity.

  By avoiding the use of high pressures, turbulence is significantly reduced, which in turn helps prevent porosity and leads to the production of smoother components and parts.

Step 3: Cool

  After the molten metal is injected into the casting, it is allowed to cool and solidify. The metal should have had enough time to take the shape of the mold and needs to be fully set before loosening the mold. Removing castings prematurely can lead to irreversible defects.

Step 4: Eject

  After a sufficient amount of time, the mold halves are loosened and opened, and the casting is carefully removed. This can be done manually, or in some cases ejector pins are used to safely push the casting out of the gravity die casting machine.

Step 5: Trim

  The final stage of the gravity casting process is finishing. As the metal continues to cool, any scrap metal—including sprues, runners, sprues, and flash—is professionally removed from the casting. A variety of tools are used to remove any sharp edges and excess material, resulting in the desired component shape, and the parts are often cleaned before being sent to the customer.
