What is the difference between low pressure casting and gravity casting?

Low pressure casting

The use of dry, clean compressed air will hold the furnace in the aluminium liquid from the bottom up through the ascending liquid pipe and pouring system smoothly up to the casting machine mould cavity to maintain a certain pressure, until the casting solidified after the release of pressure. This process of filling and solidification under pressure, so the filling is good, the casting less shrinkage, high densification.


Gravity casting

Gravity casting refers to the liquid metal in the earth under the action of gravity into the casting process, also known as pouring.


So what are the similarities and differences between low-pressure casting and gravity casting?

Mould selection: are divided into metal type and non-metallic type (such as sand).

Metal-type mould procurement costs are relatively high; and wood-type mould procurement costs are low, but if not used for a long time or the need for mass production, will incur certain maintenance costs.

Production efficiency: metal-type low-pressure casting easy to achieve automated beat production, high efficiency; resin sand mould shape and internal core box can only be used once, lower production efficiency.

Material utilisation: low-pressure casting is suitable for the production of thin-walled castings, risers take up very little material; gravity casting is not suitable for the production of thin-walled castings, the need to set up risers. (Riser is a supplementary part attached to the casting above or on the side to avoid defects in the casting. The gate is the head of the part, the riser is the tail of the part, used to observe whether the cavity is filled with saturation, both need to be removed.)

Casting materials: gravity casting for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Low-pressure casting is mostly used for non-ferrous metal casting; alloy materials are more expensive, low-pressure casting can reduce the riser loss.
